Clone HD and upgrade the internal HD. HOw to use external firewise HD.
If you want to upgrade your built-in HD the see below for one exmaple of upgrade process:
1) Buy a empty firewire SATA HD enclosure - I got this one:
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MSTG800U2K/
2) Buy 2.5" HD that you can mount in case from1 - you will initially use this as an external HD and once cloned you can move that 2.5" HD to the MBP - see later. Make sure you but a SATA coz that is what later will fit into the MBP. I got this one: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Seagate/ST9120821AS/ . I intentionally didnt go for 7200 PRM as it will consume more battery and batt life is critical for me.
3) Plug-in the external HD to firewire and use Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility to set the partition. Make sure your use GUID Partition table so the HD is bootable. I called the new HD the same as the existing - how knows if changing name will screw up smth -so name= "Macintosh HD"
4) Now copy the whole disk - I used the freeware program CarbonCopyCloner - get it here http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html. Note OS X will call your external HD "Macintosh HD 1" - dont worry..
Go to sleep - copying my 70GB of data took 300min..
5) Now test booting from the external firewire drive - retart your MBP and when it power on hold the "option" key - OS will then display the available HD.
Assuming all this works fine then you are now ready to replace the internal HD with the one from your external enclosure. NOTE YOU DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!!
6) Use either of these instructuctions:
A Step by Step with pictures here: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/85.5.0.html
A complete video here: http://media.macsales.com/highres.html
7) After completing above you should now be the happy owner of an upgraded HD. - Have fun.
